St.Catharines Market Square
Whether for a fresh food or art market, a film screening or community event, Market Square provides a well-visited venue in the heart of Downtown St. Catharines.
Completed in 2001 with a project value of $1.5 million, the design of the Market was intended to complement the architecture of the adjacent mid-19th century Lincoln County Courthouse. The new structure replaced a fabric canopy-covered walkway that had served the market since 1986, to better facilitate the current programmatic requirements.
One of the vendors’ requirements was the ability to be able to continue to sell “off the backs” of their trucks. This request was met through the installation of 9 double-wide glazed overhead doors along both sides of the long axis of the building, which allows vendors to continue to back into their allotted spaces. During the summer months the building’s 'operable' walls provide an open, yet sheltered structure. Radiant heating elements suspended from the roof temper the indoor environment during the winter months. Building materials included laminated wood roof beams supporting exposed fir decking, multi-coloured textured concrete floor paving, metal roofing, and stone to complement the historic Courthouse.
